How Often Should You Service Your IWC?
IWC recommends a full mechanical service every 5–7 years under normal conditions — longer than most Swiss brands recommend, a reflection of their confidence in the lubricant longevity in the 52000 and 82000 calibres. In practice, the service interval depends heavily on usage: an Aquatimer used for diving needs more frequent inspection than a Portofino dress watch worn occasionally.
The most important thing is not to wait until the watch stops. Lubricants that have fully dried cause metal-on-metal wear at pivots and jewels. By the time a watch runs erratically, this wear has often already occurred. Servicing on schedule is always cheaper than servicing after a problem develops.
Signs Your IWC Needs Servicing
- Gaining or losing more than ±15 seconds per day
- Crown stiff or gritty when winding or setting
- Power reserve shorter than the rated period (Cal 52000: 7 days; Cal 82000: 68 hours)
- Chronograph start, stop, or reset feels imprecise
- Calendar complication failing to advance cleanly at midnight
- Moisture, fogging, or condensation visible under the crystal
- Watch stopping intermittently — dry lubricants cause erratic running before full stoppage
IWC Servicing Cost in Singapore
Our movement overhaul starts from S$300 — the exact price is confirmed after a free assessment. Battery replacement starts from S$30. Complication servicing (perpetual calendar, annual calendar, chronograph) is quoted individually after inspection, as the scope depends on the specific complication and its condition. Crystal replacement and crown repair are also quoted after inspection.
Authorised IWC service centres (operated by Richemont) charge a significant premium over independent workshop rates, with typical turnaround of 8–16 weeks. For out-of-warranty watches, an independent workshop provides the same professional standard at considerably lower cost and faster turnaround.
IWC Cal 52000 — A 7-Day Power Reserve Movement
The Cal 52000 is IWC's flagship in-house automatic, notable for its 7-day power reserve — achieved via a twin-barrel configuration. It powers the Portugieser Automatic and Hand-Wound lines. The twin barrels require careful attention during service: both must be correctly wound down before disassembly, and mainspring replacement (if needed) involves sourcing the correct spec for each barrel.
The Cal 82000, used in the Portugieser Chronograph, is based on the same architecture but adds a column wheel flyback chronograph module. Servicing both together adds significantly to the complexity and time required — hence this is quoted separately from a base movement overhaul.
Should I Use an Authorised IWC Service Centre or an Independent?
If your IWC is still within its original manufacturer warranty, contact IWC directly to preserve it. For out-of-warranty watches — which describes most IWC pieces in Singapore — an independent workshop offers professional service at significantly lower cost and faster turnaround. We are not authorised by IWC Schaffhausen or Richemont.
