How Often Should You Service Your Audemars Piguet?

Every 5–7 years for standard Royal Oak models. Perpetual calendars and tourbillons should be serviced every 5 years — more components mean more potential wear. Signs it needs service: accuracy beyond ±5 sec/day, stiff or scratchy crown, reduced power reserve on the Cal 3120, or moisture behind the crystal.

The Royal Oak — The Watch That Changed Everything

In 1972, Audemars Piguet asked Gerald Genta to design a new watch in one night. He sketched the Royal Oak — an octagonal stainless steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet, exposed screws, and a "tapisserie" dial. At launch, its price was higher than a gold watch. The industry was baffled. Within years, it had created the luxury steel sports watch segment.

The Royal Oak's defining features — the integrated bracelet, the octagonal bezel with 8 H-screws, the "Grande Tapisserie" or "Petite Tapisserie" dial — all require specialist knowledge to service correctly. The integrated bracelet attaches via screws threaded directly into the case lugs. Each link is precisely fitted. The octagonal crystal sits in the bezel with a specific gasket profile. None of this is routine work.

Cal 3120 — AP's In-House Royal Oak Calibre

The Cal 3120, introduced in 2004, is AP's in-house automatic movement powering the standard Royal Oak. It beats at 21,600 vph (3Hz), runs a 22-carat gold rotor with a peripheral weight to reduce magnetic interference, and delivers 60 hours of power reserve. After full service, we measure power reserve over a 60-hour period before returning the watch — if it falls below 58 hours, we investigate the barrel and bridle.

Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph — Cal 4302

The Offshore uses Cal 4302 — a larger, more robust movement than the standard Royal Oak's Cal 3120. It's a column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch rather than a lateral clutch, giving cleaner chronograph engagement. On flyback references, the reset and restart happen in a single pusher press. The movement is generously sized at 36mm and has excellent serviceability — but the column wheel and clutch components require calibre-specific lubrication that differs from the base movement.

Audemars Piguet is one of the last remaining truly independent, family-owned Swiss watch manufacturers at the haute horlogerie tier. Founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, Vallée de Joux, Switzerland — the same valley that has produced some of the world's most complex movements — AP has never been acquired by a group. The founding families, Audemars and Piguet, still own and operate the company. This independence shapes everything: movements are made in-house, complications are developed internally, and production volumes are deliberately limited.
