How Often Should You Service Your Franck Muller?

The Crazy Hours — How It Works and What Goes Wrong

The Crazy Hours is Franck Muller's most recognisable complication. The hour hand jumps non-sequentially — 1 o'clock position shows 12, then jumps to 7 for 1pm, then 2 for 2pm, and so on — driven by a jumping mechanism involving an indexing wheel, star wheel, and spring-loaded jumper. The dial numbers are placed in a randomised order to match this jumping sequence.

Over time, three things can go wrong: the jumper spring weakens and causes hesitation before the jump; the star wheel's tips wear and the jump becomes imprecise; or oil dries out and the mechanism becomes stiff, causing the hour to jump in two stages instead of one clean snap. All three are serviceable — the module is disassembled, cleaned, and the jumper spring replaced if necessary. We verify clean, sharp jumps through all 12 positions after reassembly.
