What to Do Immediately If Your Luxury Watch Gets Water Damaged
Finding moisture, fogging, or droplets inside your luxury timepiece is a heart-stopping moment. Whether you forgot to screw down the crown before a swim, or Singapore’s intense humidity breached a worn-out gasket, you are now racing against a ticking clock.
Within hours, trapped moisture will begin corroding the delicate steel components of your movement. Immediate action can mean the difference between a simple dial dry-out and an incredibly expensive, complete movement replacement.
The 4-Step Emergency Protocol for a Wet Watch
If you spot condensation under the crystal glass, perform these four steps immediately before bringing it to a professional service center:
Step 1: Pull the Crown Out Completely
Pull the winding crown out to its furthest position (the time-setting position). This stops the movement from running, preventing gears from grinding rust into other components. More importantly, it opens up a small gap in the internal seals, allowing some trapped moisture an escape route.
Step 2: Use a Temporary Heat Source (Face Up)
Place the watch face-up on a warm (but not boiling hot) surface. Excellent options include:
- An electronic device or router that emits gentle warmth.
- Under a low-heat desk lamp (keep it at least 20cm away).
- Do NOT use a hairdryer on high heat or place it in a microwave, as extreme heat will melt internal lubricants and warp the dial components.
Step 3: Enclose It with a Desiccant (The Silica Gel Trick)
Place the watch inside a sealed airtight container or Ziploc bag packed with silica gel packets (the small moisture-absorbing packets found in new shoe boxes or electronics).
Important Note: Avoid using raw white rice. Rice dust and starch can easily creep through the open crown into the watch movement, creating a sticky paste that destroys mechanical gears.
Step 4: Rush It to a Repair Specialist Within 24 Hours
The steps above are merely first aid; they will not save your watch long-term. Even if the fogging disappears, residual moisture and mineral deposits remain trapped inside, slowly eating away at the movement. The watch must be opened, stripped down, dried, and re-oiled by a professional as soon as possible.
What a Professional Watch Service Center Will Do
When you bring a water-damaged luxury watch to our Singapore facility, our master technicians initiate an immediate triage protocol:
- De-casing the Movement: We immediately remove the mechanism from the case to stop rust from forming on the dial and hands.
- Ultrasonic Chemical Cleaning: Every single gear is washed in specialized solutions to remove all traces of water, salt, or moisture oxidation.
- Relubrication & Reassembly: The movement is meticulously put back together using premium Swiss synthetic oils.
- Gasket Replacement & Pressure Testing: We swap out the failed seals for brand-new factory-grade gaskets and perform dry/wet pressure tests to guarantee its depth rating.
🚨 TIME CRITICAL EMERGENCY?
If your luxury watch has water inside it right now, do not wait. Bring it directly to our workshop in downtown Singapore. We prioritize water damage emergencies to save your movement before irreversible oxidation occurs.
