How Often Should You Service Your Seiko?

Every 5–7 years for automatic Seiko models. Quartz models: battery every 2–3 years with gasket inspection at the same time. Kinetic models: the capacitor typically lasts around 10 years before it starts losing power reserve — you'll notice the watch stops after a shorter period of no wear than it used to. Solar models: the secondary cell typically lasts 10–15 years.

Seiko Kinetic — What Goes Wrong and Why

Kinetic watches are brilliant in concept — you wind the watch by wearing it, like an automatic, but instead of a mainspring the energy is stored electrically in a capacitor. The problem is capacitors have a finite lifespan. After about a decade, the capacitor's capacity drops and the watch can only store a fraction of its original charge — so instead of running for days without wearing, it stops after hours.

The fix is straightforward: replace the capacitor, confirm the rotor is generating charge normally, and verify the power reserve circuit is working. Most general watch shops don't stock the correct Seiko capacitor cells or know the verification procedure. We do.

Seiko Solar — When the Secondary Cell Fails

Solar-powered Seiko watches use a tiny photovoltaic panel to charge a secondary cell (similar to a rechargeable battery). After 10–15 years in Singapore's climate, this secondary cell degrades. Symptoms: the watch loses accuracy overnight even after being left in sunlight all day, or stops before the overcharge protection activates. Replacing the secondary cell restores the watch to factory performance.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive — The Third Way

The Spring Drive is one of the most remarkable movements in watchmaking. It uses a traditional mechanical mainspring for power — wound by hand or by rotor — but regulates the release of energy using a glide spring (a blade of silicon) braked by an electromagnetic governor. The result is mechanical power with quartz-level accuracy: Grand Seiko specifies ±1 sec/day for Spring Drive movements.

Servicing a Spring Drive requires understanding both the mechanical side (mainspring, gear train, rotor) and the electronic side (tri-synchro regulator, glide spring clearance). We handle Spring Drive movements in-house and verify accuracy against specification after reassembly.

Prospex Diver Pressure Testing

Every time a Seiko diver case is opened — for a battery, a crystal, or a full service — the factory water resistance seal is broken. Without re-sealing and pressure-testing, the watch may look fine but let in moisture mid-dive. We replace crown and caseback gaskets and pressure-test Prospex divers to their rated 200m and Marinemaster to 300m after every service. This is not an optional extra — it's part of every service we do.
